In this Article:Drawing on a New SketchDrawing From an ImageCommunity Q&A

Autodesk Sketchbook is a drawing application for Windows, Macs, and other electronics. If you're new to the app on your iPad, this wikiHow will help you start drawing.

1
Drawing on a New Sketch

  1. 1
Open the application. To open the application, tap the icon.
  2. 2
Select the plus (+) button in the bottom center of the screen. A menu should appear, showing options for drawing.
  3. 3
Select the "New Sketch" option. From there, you should be able to type your preferred width and height. The dimensions are in pixels. There are also pre-made options if you'd prefer to use those. Once you have your desired measurements set, press Create.
  4. 4
Choose your brushes. To get to the brush menu, tap the top of the rectangle on the left side of the screen. There are many brushes, including many pens for inking, brushes for painting, blurring tools, and even brushes that mimic markers. If you're planning on outlining a drawing, the Inking Pen may work best.
  5. 5
Change the brush settings if you need to. When you're in the brush library, there is a tab named Settings to the right of the Library tab. That is where the brush settings are. There are many settings depending on the brush. Some of the ones you will find are:
    • Size, which changes the size of the brush.
    • Opacity, which will increase or decrease the amount of transparency.
    • Size with heavy pressure, which changes the size of the drawn line the more you press.
    • Size with light pressure, which changes the size of the drawn line the less you press.
  6. 6
Choose a color. If you press on the color icon, you can use the color wheel to choose which color you'd like to draw with. There is another tab titled Copic. That tab provides you with colors you'd find on Copic markers.
  7. 7
Add layers. If you're working on a complex drawing, you can use layers so that your lines won't get mixed up. On the right, there is a rectangle. On the top of the rectangle, there should be a plus (+) sign. Press that to add a layer.
    • If you tap on each layer box, the layer settings should pop up.
  8. 8
Use the toolbar. On the top of your screen is your toolbar. That contains a lot of the tools you'll use when drawing. The toolbar contains the following tools:
    • Undo and Redo
    • The Select tool (that allows you to select a portion of your drawing)
    • The Transform tool (that allows you to move and edit how a layer looks)
    • The Fill Bucket (for filling color)
    • The Rulers (which allow you to draw a straight line)
    • The Symmetry and Shapes tools (which let you draw symmetrically or create shapes)
    • Predictive Stroke (which will predict what your stoke is going to look like. It also will create shapes, only according to the line you drew.)
    • Import Image, Text, and Screen Recording tools are also there.
    • On the far right of the toolbar is a square-like icon. Tap that, and most of your tools will disappear, allowing you a better view of your canvas.

Drawing From an Image

  1. 1
Open the application and select the plus button in the bottom center. Select the New from Image button when it appears. From there, you can choose whether to take a new picture, import a photo, or browse your files.
  2. 2
Select your picture, then hit "Create". The picture should be on the first layer.
    • You can change the dimensions to either cut off your drawing or add white spaces around it.
  3. 3
Add a new layer. Press the large plus (+) button on the top of the rectangle to the right of your screen. That will add a layer on top of your picture, so you won't accidentally draw over your picture.
    • If you lock the layer the picture is on, you won't be able to edit it; this decreases the risk of accidentally drawing on that layer.
  4. 4
Select your desired brush and start drawing.
